Practicality meets style in the Lindy—released in the house’s 2007 spring/summer collection under the direction of Jean-Paul Gaultier, the Hermès Lindy sets out to make wearers not only look but also feel good. Named after the vibrant Lindy Hop dance, it is an accessory made for motion. The bag began with an observation by designer Frédéric Vidal. The handles of the average handbag sit parallel to its main body, and this means that you have to stick your arm out and hold the bag an awkward distance away to keep it aligned to you. This discomfort is what the Lindy’s design circumvents.
The handles of the Lindy are configured perpendicularly, attached to the side gussets. The result is a handbag that sits more naturally in your hand and against your hip. Practicality is extended with the Lindy’s removable shoulder strap, which attaches directly and interestingly to the handles. This unique design also gives the Lindy an unconventional appearance—it folds in on itself when held by the top handles or worn with a strap.
Aligned with its dedication to utility, the Lindy offers ample storage space in its interior as well as extra capacity in the side pockets. It is equipped with Hermès’ signature turn clasp on the front and two zippers on the opening for added security. The Lindy stands proudly despite its relaxed silhouette due to the metal studs on its base.

A Guide to the Lindy Bag’s Materials and Sizes
The Hermès Lindy comes in the maison’s classic leathers, Clemence, Swift, and Evercolor, but more exotic options such as crocodile, ostrich, and Himalayan leather have also been created. The color varieties are plentiful: neutral tones of Noir, Etoupe, and Gold are the style’s all-time favorites, while deep shades like Bleu Royal and Vert Cyprès as well as playful colors like Rose Texas and Lime Citron are available to choose from too.
When it comes to size, the Lindy tends to run small. The most popular in the line is the Mini Lindy at 20 cm. A newcomer, debuting in just 2019, the Mini Lindy has become highly coveted due to the charm that this smallest size adds to the design. Originally, however, the Lindy came in four sizes: 26, 30, 34, and the Voyage 45. The medium sizes, the Lindy 30 and 34, are most widespread.
True to its name, the Lindy is a bag intended for those who are constantly in motion. With an ergonomic design that molds against the body and spacious storage, it is a perfect fit for bag enthusiasts who are seeking an everyday option that is practical as well as stylish. No need to compromise form for function with the Lindy—it does both to an exceptional degree!
