A crowded shelf works against every other precaution. Bags pressed shoulder to shoulder push one another out of true, and a bag stored beneath heavier things will take on their shape long before they take on its. Leave a little air around it, keep it out of direct sunlight, and choose the driest corner of the closet you have.
