Two Constructions, One Silhouette
The difference is in the seams. A sellier is stitched with the leather facing outward, the edges exposed and finished, which gives the bag its sharp, architectural lines. A retourne is assembled inside out and then turned, so the seams sit within. That turning softens every edge and gives the bag its rounder, more yielding shape.
The same trapezoid emerges from both, but one is held by rigid construction and the other by the leather's own body.
Which One Relaxes First
A sellier is generally the more self-supporting of the two. Its exposed seams and the firmer leathers often chosen for it hold the corners at attention. A retourne, by design, is supple. That is precisely its charm, and also why it is likelier to settle inward when it sits empty for a long stretch.
This is a tendency, not a certainty. Plenty of retourne bags hold their lines beautifully for decades. But if you own both and can only support one, the retourne is where a pillow earns its keep first.
How to Store a Retourne
Fill it gently and completely, so the sides have something to rest against rather than fold into. A pillow cut for the silhouette distributes support evenly across the base and walls, which improvised filling rarely manages. Store it upright, tuck the clochette and strap inside rather than letting them rest against the leather, and leave the flap closed but unfastened.
