Few bags define an era quite like the Balenciaga City. Born in 2001 from Nicolas Ghesquière's vision, the City—with its slouchy silhouette, distressed leather, jangling tassels, and signature studded hardware—became the defining "It bag" of the 2000s and remains a cult object today. It is a bag built on contradiction: luxurious yet rebellious, structured in its hardware yet utterly soft in its body. To care for a City is to preserve that delicate balance between polished and lived-in.
The City's body is famously soft—crafted from lambskin or goatskin Arena leather, tumbled and treated to look beautifully broken-in from the very first day. This softness is the bag's signature and its greatest fragility. With no internal frame, the City slumps dramatically when empty, and over months of unsupported storage, that slump deepens into permanent creasing across the front and a flattened, lifeless base. A bag pillow shaped to the City's interior, with a soft satin exterior, restores the gentle, rounded slouch the bag was designed to have—full and relaxed, rather than collapsed and creased.
The City's hardware is its visual identity: the studs, the buckles, the front zip, and the iconic dangling tassels that thread through the leather. The tassels, in particular, are prone to fraying and curling over time, especially if the bag is stored crushed against other items. Allowing the tassels to hang freely during storage, rather than trapped or bent, preserves their straight, elegant drape. The brass or aged-silver hardware should be wiped only with a dry microfiber cloth—the City's vintage-effect finish is easily dulled by polishes and cleaners.

The thin, braided leather handles are another quiet vulnerability. Frequently gripped and flexed, they darken and soften with the oils of the hand, and if folded under weight during storage, they hold a permanent kink. Letting them rest upright keeps their shape true.
Storage is essential for a bag this soft. A breathable satin dust bag, fully enclosing the City, protects the distressed leather from dust and UV fade while letting it breathe—and the City's already-tumbled leather is especially thirsty for humidity, making plastic storage a quiet disaster. Keep the bag upright in a cool, dark place, never stacked beneath heavier pieces that would crush its soft form.
The distressed leather should never be "restored" to look new; its lived-in character is the point. The goal of care is not to erase the City's age but to keep that age beautiful—supple, evenly worn, and free of the hard creases and misshapen slump that careless storage creates.
The City is a bag of attitude and ease, designed to look like it has lived a thousand lives. Cared for thoughtfully, it ages to that look—softening with grace, its hardware glinting, its tassels swinging, a piece of fashion history kept alive.
