The Louis Vuitton Petite Malle is the maison's most architectural curio — a miniature trunk-bag introduced by Nicolas Ghesquière in 2014 that takes its silhouette directly from Louis Vuitton's nineteenth-century steamer trunks. With its rigid box shape, brass-tone hardware corners, and S-lock closure, the Petite Malle is less a handbag than a piece of portable architecture, distilling the maison's 170-year history into a single, jewel-like object. To care for one is to preserve a bag whose every angle is exact.
The Petite Malle's hard-sided construction makes it one of the most structurally robust bags in modern luxury — the body holds its shape regardless of what is inside, and the rigid walls resist crushing in ways that no soft bag can. But this very rigidity is also its vulnerability. The corners and edges, reinforced with brass, are where the bag absorbs every bump and brush against the world, and over time, scratches accumulate along the most exposed angles. The leather panels themselves can scratch at the corners where the structure concentrates wear. A bag pillow may not be strictly necessary inside the Petite Malle's rigid frame, but a soft satin liner or pouch inside the bag protects the interior from contents and prevents the lining from staining.

The bag should be stored upright in a cool, dark place, never stacked — its rigid corners can damage other bags, and other bags can scratch its paint. Plastic should be avoided entirely.
