As its name suggests, the Puzzle is made up of many individual pieces—75, to be exact—which are joined together by hand jigsaw-style. The result is a sturdy bag that is a testament to the house’s dedicated Spanish craftsmanship, harking back to its start as a leather workshop and collective. But the Puzzle’s geometric appearance is not just for show—taking inspiration from the Japanese art of paper folding, the bag is foldable and retains its “fold lines” once unfurled.
This cult classic came from Northern Irish designer Jonathan Anderson during his time as Loewe’s creative director. Released in 2015, the Puzzle was the first new bag design the house released since the 1980s and quickly garnered popularity. The androgynous and simple shape first debuted on the men’s runway, though the women’s collection adopted it soon after.
Versatile yet understated, the Puzzle makes a case for itself as an everyday bag that catches eyes. It can be worn five ways: as a shoulder bag, crossbody, tote, clutch, or bum bag. The elegant, distinct look of the Puzzle means that it pairs well with just about any outfit without being outshined. The soft leather, and the cuboid scores marking it, makes the bag a subtle statement piece.
The Endless Puzzle
In 2025, the Puzzle’s tenth anniversary was celebrated with the release of limited editions. Named the Puzzle 10, the collection featured re-editions like the dreamy and bright Cloud and the playful Polka bags. An entirely new design, the Puzzle 10 Confetti, was also introduced.
Though not quite as dramatic as the limited editions, the Puzzle remains a celebrated bag among casual fans and keen collectors. It’s not hard to see why; the elegant cuboid look pairs well with the available solid color options like black, brown, clay, and blush. Both lambskin and calfskin leather variants truly shine with more humble colorways. However, the seasonal animations, such as the Futurist Cat collection, also have their own appeal, particularly in the contrast of the lively design with the simple, defined silhouette of the bag.
The Puzzle comes in a few variations. The classic is the Puzzle as we know it, with its soft leather look and structured origami lines. There is a precise gap between each of its leather panels, allowing it to be folded completely flat. Several calfskin finishes are available to choose from: classic, shiny, soft-grained, and satin.
The Puzzle Edge puts a spin on this original construction, made instead with pieces that overlap and single-stitch lines. Classic calfskin gives it a sleek, faintly matte finish. The Soft Puzzle Edge, on the other hand, is of the same construction but with a soft-grained calfskin, which provides a more supple feel.
The newest iteration is the Featherlight Puzzle. Nappa leather allows it to be lighter and softer than its predecessors, giving a more relaxed, slouchy look. Complimenting this material is the addition of metal feet at the base to protect the bag from scratches.
